titleOfInvention Sulfonation of crude oils to produce petroleum sulfonates
abstract 1378724 Petroleum sulphonates MARATHON OIL CO 9 Feb 1973 [27 March 1972] 6635/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division El] Petroleum sulphonates having an average E.W. of from 350 to 525 are obtained by contacting SO 3 with a hydrocarbon, the aromatic portion of which has an aliphatic-to-aromatic proton ratio in the range from 4 to 18 and an average M.W. in the range from 200 to 1000, said hydrocarbon being selected from whole crude oil, topped crude oil and mixtures thereof, in a reaction zone, at a temperature from 80 to 250‹ C. and for a reaction time from about 0À001 to about 3600 sees. wherein from about 5 to about 30 lbs. of SO 3 are contacted with each 100 lbs. of said hydrocarbon. The reaction may be carried out in the presence or absence of a reaction solvent and/or a SO 3 diluent. Specified reaction solvents are ethylene dichloride trichloroethane, nitrobenzene, nitropropane, and mixtures thereof. Specified SO 3 diluents are refined light paraffins, crude oil light ends, air, SO 2 , N 2 , natural gas, and mixtures thereof. The contacting of SO 3 with the hydrocarbon may occur in the presence of an additive having a M.W. of 200 to 1000 and being selected from aromatic, olefinic or oxygenated hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof. The products may be extracted from the reaction mixture with an extraction solvent. Examples are given which illustrate the process. The products may be employed in a process of petroleum recovery.
