titleOfInvention Spectrally sensitized direct positive silver halide emulsion layers
abstract 1378548 Methine dyes having a thiazole nucleus linked to the methine chain through the 5-position AGFA-GEVAERT AG 30 June 1972 [2 July 1971] 30760/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division G2] A methine dye used for sensitizing photographic direct-positive silver halide emulsions has one of the formulae where R<SP>1</SP> is saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted, cycloalkyl or aryl; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>8</SP> are each H, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group or aryl; R<SP>3</SP> is SR<SP>9</SP> or NR<SP>10</SP>R<SP>11</SP>; R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are each H, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, aryl orcarbalkoxy and R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> may together complete a condensed benzene or naphthalene ring ; R<SP>9</SP>, R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are each saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups or aryl and R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> may also together complete a heterocyclic ring; n is 0 or 1; m is 0 or 1; Anionis an anion, the anion being absent where R<SP>1</SP> or R<SP>4</SP> contains an acid group in anionic form; and Z completes a heterocyclic group containing a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, the aryl groups and heterocyclic groups completed by R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> and/or Z optionally carrying additional substituents. The formulae of 38 such dyes are given in the Specification.
