titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of n-halogenomethyl-ureas and thioureas
abstract 1377326 Halogenomethyl ureas and thioureas BAYER AG 2 March 1973 [4 March 1972] 10243/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] Novel N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-trisubstituted N-halogenomethyl ureas and thioureas having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, bicycloalkyl, bicycloalkenyl, aryl or aralkyl radical; R<SP>2</SP> is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or alkoxy radical, or a halogenoalkyl or cycloalkyl radical; R<SP>3</SP> is an optionally halogen-substituted alkyl radical or an alkenyl or alkynyl radical; or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together form an alkylene bridge which can be interrupted by one or more hetero atoms or by the NH group and which forms a heterocyclic ring with the adjoining nitrogen atom; X is oxygen or sulphur and Y is chlorine or bromine, are prepared by reacting one mole of an N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-trisubstituted urea or thiourea of the formula with at least one mole of formaldehyde and a halogenating agent at a temperature of from - 10‹ to +150‹ C. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of a diluent or solvent and, as a catalyst, a proton-releasing compound, e.g. a hydrogen halide, or a Lewis acid. The formaldehyde may be formed in situ. The compounds of the invention are useful as plantprotection agents and as hydrotropic textile auxiliaries.
