titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of phosphine oxides and sulphides
abstract 1376028 Phosphine oxides and phosphine sulphides SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 26 Oct 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 49391/72 Heading C2P A phosphine oxide (or sulphide) of the formula in which R is a linear or branched aliphatic radical, or an alicyclic, araliphatic or aromatic radical and X is O or S is obtained by reacting a halo compound R.Hal in which Hal is a halogen atom with Mg to form a Grignard derivative RMgHal, said reaction being commenced in the presence of a very small amount of a solvent mixture containing a preponderant amount by weight of diethyl ether and a minor amount of a second solvent which is aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or a tertiary amine and then continued and completed in the presence of a solvent mixture containing a preponderant amount by weight of the second solvent, adding POCl 3 or PSCl 3 to the reaction mixture containing the Grignard derivative, hydrolysing the product thus obtained and isolating the phosphine oxide (or sulphide), formed by removing the solvent by steam stripping or steam distillation. The invention also comprises as new products: tri-(n-decyl)-, tri-(n-dodecyl-, tri-(phenylethyl)-, tri-(phenylpropyl)-, and tri-(3,5,5-trimethylhexyl)- phosphine sulphides, said phosphine sulphides being obtainable by the defined process. The products are useful for the selective extraction of metals, e.g. the lanthanides and the actinides, and in an example a mineral containing uranium oxide is treated with nitric acid to form uranyl nitrate which by reaction with tri-n-pentyl phosphine sulphide forms the complex UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 .2(CH 3 -(CH 2 ) 4 ) 3 P=S which can be readily separated by conventional separation methods.
