titleOfInvention | Bright chromium plating |
abstract | 1376022 Electro-depositing chromium DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 18 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 7598/72 Heading C7B An aqueous bright chromium plating bath comprises a complex water-soluble chromic compound containing carboxylic (glycolic, lactic and/ or oxalic) acid and halogen (F and/or Cl) constituents, the molar concentration of Cr being 0.5 to 3 (i.e. 26 to 156 g/l Cr), the molar ratio of Cr to carboxyl constituent being 1:0.7 to 1:3 and of Cr to halogen being 1:0.1 to 1:3.5. The complex may be prepared by combining Cr metal or CrO 3 with the carboxylic acid and e.g. HCl, or reacting chromic halide e.g. CrF 3 with the carboxylic acid. The bath may also contain 50-200 g/l NaCl and/or KC1 to enhance conductivity and 10-70 g/l boric acid or an equivalent such as borax, boron oxide and/or Na oxyfluoborate. Alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide may be added to adjust pH within range 1.8 to 4.9. An aqueous concentrate of the reaction complex from the halogen, carboxylic acid and chromic compound contains at least 50 g/l of Cr for dilution with aqueous medium for preparing a new plating bath or sustaining a working bath. An anode of graphite, Pt or platinized Ti may be used. The substrate may be of steel, brass, bronze, Cu (alloy), a Zn die casting, or Ni or activated plastic surface. |
