titleOfInvention Silica gel bodies having surface properties
abstract 1373734 Surface modified SiO2 gel RHONEPROGIL 28 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 19865/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Surface modified SiO2 gel microspheres prepared by contacting the microspheres with an organic compound which contains an Si atom, to which is attached (a) a group capable of reacting with OH groups on the surface of the microspheres and (b) a substituted hydrocarbon or hetero-interrupted hydrocarbon chain having at least one F atom or fluorinated methyl radical as a substituent on the chain, thereby replacing the H of the OH with an organic group. The organic group may have the formula wherein each of R1, R2 and R3 is a trihalomethyl radical or a halogen atom with the proviso that at least one of the halogen atoms is a F atom, R4 is a bivalent organic radical comprising at least 3 carbon atoms, and R5 and R6 are unrestricted, wherein the organic compound is (a) wherein R7 is an atom or radical capable of reacting with a OH group, or (b) a polymerized silane obtained by the reaction of a vinyl silane, containing a OH reactable unit, with an alphaethylenically unsaturated compound containing the group The organic compound may have the formula or be obtained by copolymerizing vinyl triethoxysilane with heptafluoroisopropyl acrylate. The microspheres may be heated in the presence of alkali metal atoms or NH3 before treatment. The microspheres may have a size of 100-200Á, a surface area of 65-428 m.<2>/g., a pore volume of 0À84-1À00 cm.<3>/g. and a mean pore diameter 70-350Š.
