titleOfInvention | Nuclear fuel |
abstract | 1370690 Nuclear fuel NUKEM GmbH 28 Sept 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 45040/71 Heading G6C Nuclear fuel comprises separate zones of fuel material (plutonium carbide or nitride) and fertile material (uranium carbide or nitride), the porosity of the fuel zones being higher than that of the fertile material zones. The fuel is prepared by mixing uranium carbide or nitride in granulated form with plutonium oxide and carbon, compressing the mixture, and sintering. The plutonium oxide and carbon may be prereacted before mixing with the other component. If the proportions of plutonium oxide and carbon are such that sub-stoichiometric plutonium carbide is formed, metallic plutonium becomes concentrated at the surfaces of the particles which may be heated in N 2 , H 2 S or PH 3 to form stabilizing nitride, sulphide or phosphide coatings. The original grains of uranium carbide may be coated with a protective layer of stearic acid. Specification 1,370,689 is referred to. |
