titleOfInvention Sorbent for separation of components of aqueous liquid and aerosols and method of manufacturing same
abstract 1370446 Removing components from liquids CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 15 Sept 1971 [15 Sept 1970 16 Sept 1970] 43052/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] A sorbent for separating dissolved or dispersed components from aqueous liquids and gases comprises a major portion of a living or dead telomic plant material or algae (e.g. alfalfa, clover, hay, grass, leaves, seaweed) in comminuted form with a minor portion of a hydrophilic, water-swellable, water-insoluble polymeric material as a binder. The polymer may be prepared from acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile with one or more of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid acrylamide, methacrylamide, ethylene sulphonic acid, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl pyridine, hydroxyethyl acrylate acid methacrylate, monoacrylates and monomethacrylates of glycols, maleic anhydride, and glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate. The polymer may comprise the following side groups: amide, imide, carboxylic acid, hydroxamic acid, sulphonic acid, hydroxyl, amine, hydroxyalkylester, lactam, lactone, pyridine, nitrile, alkoxyalkyl, alkylester and acyl. The polymer may be cross-linked, e.g. using formaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine, dimethylol urea, epoxides, or isocyanates. The polymer may be prepared in the presence of the plant material. The sorbent may be prepared by mixing a solution of polymer in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide dimethyl sulphoxide, acetone or alcohol, shaping or pelletizing the resultant mixture and removing the solvent. The sorbent may be pulverized. The polymer may be cross-linked before or after the solvent removal. The sorbent may be used to remove U, Ra, Au, Cu, Hg, Pt, Pd, Al, Cr, Fe, W, Mo and V. The sorbent may be used with an ion exchanger.
