titleOfInvention Polyester fibres
abstract 1369851 Polyester fibres TEIJIN Ltd 6 Oct 1971 46505/71 Headings D1F D1R and D1W Hollow polyester fibres are made from a tow of hollow drawn filaments of polyester containing at least 85 mol per cent, and preferably at least 95 mol per cent, of ethylene terephthalate units. The tow is pre-heated to 70-140‹C, is crimped in a stuffer box, is further heat treated while being held in a state in which the percentage relaxation of the tow is at least 100% and the tow density is 200 to 400 kg/mo<SP>3</SP>, and is cut to length. During the crimping, the value D of the apparant denier/cm width of the tow fed to the stuffer box is maintained greater than or equal to the values 3.7 x 10<SP>4</SP> and 0.5 x 10<SP>4</SP>W<SP>2</SP>, and less than or equal to the values 10 x 10<SP>4</SP> and 6.3 x 10<SP>4</SP>w<SP>2</SP>. The apparent denier is caclulated from the total tow denier and from the percentage hollow area in the filament c.s.a., (the percentage hollowness). The value W is the distance in cm. between opposing stuffer box walls. As shown, Fig. 3, an undrawn tow is drawn between rolls 2, 3 while being heated to 100- 120‹C by steam jet 4. The tow is then preheated in heater 8, crimped in stuffer box 10, and packed into chamber 15 to be further heated by gas fed through holes 16. Alternatively, Fig. 4, drawn tow 5 is pre-heated at 70-100‹C in aqueous bath 17 of finishing agent and is crimped in stuffer box 10. The tow is then packed by reciprocating tube 14 in tube 18 to a density determined by the position of flap 20, and is then carried by conveyer 21 into hot air chamber 22 for the further heat treatment. The resulting hollow polyester fibres have 7-10 primary crimps a, a' (Fig. 1) per 25mm, 1.5-2 secondary crimps b, b' per 25 mm, a percentage hollowness of 10-30 per cent and an apparant denier of 5.0-9.0, the secondary crimps having a degree of crimp of at least 30 per cent and a crimp elasticity of at least 70 per cent. The fibres may have an average crimp index of at least 50 per cent, and a length when straightened of 30-160 mm., and the primary crimps may have a degree of crimp of 18-28 per cent and a crimp elasticity of 70-90 per cent. A filling material made from the fibres comprises at least one layer of the fibres, having a length of 40-160 mm., which are aligned unidirectionally. The filling material has an initial bulkiness of 110 c.c./g, a compressed bulkiness of 30 c.c./g, and a recovery of bulkiness of at least 75 per cent, the methods of determining there values being described in the specification.
