titleOfInvention Process for preparation of aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides
abstract 1368973 Preparation of aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides TEIJIN Ltd 25 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970 25 Dec 1970 5 Oct 1971 26 Oct 1971] 54861/71 Heading C2C Aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides are prepared by reacting a polyester comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as the main acid component with gaseous chlorine at a temperature of 70‹ to 400‹ C. in a reaction medium which is liquid under reaction conditions and is not reactive with the acid chloride formed by the reaction, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon containing at least one chlorine-substituted alkyl group or an aromatic carboxylic acid chloride, to form an acid chloride of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid, and recovering the acid chloride from the reaction mixture. Specified polyesters are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene isophthalate, poly(ethylene terephthalate-ethylene isophthalate) copolymer polyethylene-2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, polyethylene-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl dicarboxylate or polytetramethylene terephthalate. Many examples are given showing the preparation of, for example, terephthaloyl and isophthaloyl chloride, 2,6-naphthalane dicarbonyl chloride, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl-dicarbonyl chloride all of which are also esterified with methanol.
