titleOfInvention Method of separating colloidal charged particles comprising virus particles
abstract 1367428 Separating viruses EXPLOATERINGS AB TBF 13 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 27634/72 Addition to 1318570 Heading B1H [Also in Division C6] A method of separating a mixture of charged colloidal particles comprising particles of at least one virus by passing a solution of said mixture through a bed of an adsorbent material, said adsorbent material being an insoluble, organic polymer containing amphoteric substituents comprising both basic nitrogencontaining groups and either carboxylate or sulphonate groups, so that the charged colloidal particles, including the virus particles, migrate through said absorbent material at different speeds depending upon the strength of the reciprocal interaction between the charged colloidal particles and the substituents present in said adsorbent and are selectively adsorbed by said adsorbent and eluting said charged colloidal particles and the virus particles with an aqueous buffer solution. In an Example, varieties of Red Clover Mottle Virus are separated on a column of arginine-agarose. Other adsorbents mentioned are agar, dextran or cellulose substituted by arginine or aspartic acid.
