titleOfInvention Rubber compositions
abstract 1367362 Improving adhesion to rubber MONSANTO CO 30 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 36020/71 Addition to 1365558 Heading DIP [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Fibres which have been treated with an essentially saturated acidic condensation polymer (A) of resorcinol and an unsaturate which is an olefin of 3-10 carbon atoms having 2 or more sites capable of reacting with resorcinol at least one of which is an ethylenically unsaturated group, or an alkine of 2-10 carbon atoms, are incorporated into a rubber composition comprising a rubber, the above polymer (A) and a formaldehyde donor such as hexamethylenetetramine, hexamethoxymethylmelamine or cyclotrimethyl-triamines. Polymer (A) improves the adhesion of the fibres to the rubber on vulcanization. Suitable fibres include those of polyester, rayon, nylon, cotton, wool and wood cellulose. The fibres may alternatively be treated with a composition comprising a resorcinol-formaldehyde condensation product and a butadiene-styrene vinylpyridine terpolymer latex (RFL), or may be untreated before incorporation into the rubber. In the example resorcinol and the polymer (A), prepared by condensing resorcinol with allyl chloride, is added to a rubber stock comprising smoked sheet rubber, styrenebutadiene, copolymer rubber, furnace carbon black, silica, zinc oxide, stearic acid, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide, hexamethylenetetramine and sulphur. Untreated rayon, nylon and polyester cord; polyester cord treated with the same saturated polymer (A) contained in the rubber stock are embedded in the rubber which is then vulcanized. In a similar method treated and untreated polyester cord are embedded in the above rubber composition with the exception that the silica in the rubber stock is replaced by carbon black, and additional hexamethylenetetramine is added.
