titleOfInvention Manufacture of optical elements
abstract 1362380 Making aspherical lens elements MULLARD Ltd 25 Nov 1971 54807/71 Heading G2J [Also in Division B5] A method of making an aspheric lighttransmissive optical element e.g. a Schmidt corrector plate, comprises supporting a light transmissive substrate 1, e.g. of glass, in proximity with a mould 6, filling the space between with a light-transmissive adhesive plastics, e.g. an epoxy or a polyester resin, having, when cast, approximately the same refractive index as the substrate, causing the moulded layer to adhere to both surfaces, and the substrate to elastically deform due to shrinkage of the plastics on cooling, Fig. 3 (not shown), optically working flat the outer surface of the substrate, Fig. 4 (not shown), releasing, the substrate with the moulded layer adhered thereto from the mould, and allowing it to deform back to form the optical element. The substrate is adjustably supported above the mould 6 by a sleeve 8. Prior to casting the mould surface is washed in mixture of warm water and detergent, cleaned with precipitated chalk, washed with deionised water, rinsed in isopropropyl alcohol, and then cleaned by ion bombardment in a vacuum chamber, and finally coated with a silicon release agent.
