titleOfInvention Soluble condensation products and waterthinnable paints binders prepared therefrom
abstract 1361547 Epoxy resin esters SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 9 Feb 1972 6058/72 Headings C3B and C3P Condensation products which are thinnable by water after neutralisation are prepared by: (A) reacting a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol (I) at a temperature of 120-180‹ C. simultaneously with a carboxyl-containing polymer (II) of a C 4-5 1,3-diene and a monocarboxylic acid (III); II and III are present respectively at 0À02-0À35 and 0À4-0À98 acid equivalents per epoxy equivalent of I; (B) esterifying the hydroxyl containing reaction product with 0À8-1À3 acid equivalent of a fatty acid (IV) per hydroxyl equivalent of the ester of step (A) at >200‹ C.; and (C) reacting the resultant polyester with at least 3% of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (V) or an anhydride thereof. I may be a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having an average molecular weight of 340-1100 and epoxide equivalent of 170- 550. II may be a carboxyl terminated liquid polybutadiene, obtainable by reacting polybutadiene with maleic anhydride or a reaction product of liquid polyisoprene with maleic anhydride. The acids used in steps (A) and (B) may be ethylenically unsaturated fatty acids. V may be maleic anhydride. The products may be rendered water dispersible by neutralization with a nitrogen base, e.g. a primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine. A lyotropically active solvent, e.g. ethylene glycol monobutyl ether may be added to the carboxyl containing reaction product or to the neutralized product resulting therefrom. Uses.-Coating compositions, especially for electrodeposition.
