| abstract | 1361116 Diene/substituted styrene copolymers PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 21 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18714/72 Heading C3P Rubbery random copolymers of a conjugated diene with a substituted styrene of formula in which R is a tertiary alkyl or tertiary cycloalkyl radical containing up to 12 carbons and n is 1-5, the weight ratio of diene : styrene compound being in the range 60 : 40 to 95 : 5, are prepared by solution polymerization in the presence of an initiator, e.g. n-butyl lithium, and a randomizing agent, e.g. THF or potassium t-amyloxide. Up to half of the substituted styrene may be replaced by unsubstituted styrene. Examples describe the preparation, in toluene solution and in the addition presence of SiCl 4 , of butadiene/t-butyl styrene copolymers and butadiene/styrene/t-butyl styrene terpolymers. |
