titleOfInvention | Coating of glass fibres |
abstract | 1359557 Coated glass fibres FIBREGLASS Ltd 26 July 1972 [1 July 1971] 30907/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3 and Dl] Glass fibres are sized by coating with aqueous size compositions comprising a silane, a polymeric film forming agent and an unsaturated cationic boundary lubricant composed of two major residues, one of which is derived from an unsaturated half ester or half amide, and the other of which is cationic in character, i.e. carries a positive charge or contains a centre or region of reduced electron density. Preferred boundary lubricants are those of formula wherein R 1 is C 6-24 alkyl or aryl, R 2 and R 3 are alkyl and X<SP>-</SP> is chlorine or bromine (especially where R 1 is) or of formula 3 where R is C 7-24 alkyl and M is -O- or -NH-. The silane may be a vinyl trialkoxysilane, a methacrylato silane, an epoxy silane or an amino silane. The polymeric film forming agent may be a polyvinyl acetate or a vinyl acetate/methacrylate salt or vinyl acetate/ aminoalkyl methacrylate copolymer, optionally together with a plasticiser. The compositions may also contain non- ionic surfactants, e.g. polyoxyethylene ethers and esters, and amino esters of polyhydric alcohols. Examples describe aqueous size compositions comprising vinyl acetate/aminoalkyl methacrylate copolymer dispersion stabilised with cationic surfactant together with (1) polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, mono(dimethyl aminoethyl) maleate quaternised with pdodecylbenzyl halide, methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane and acetic acid; (3) mono(dimethylamino ethyl) maleate quaternised with pdodecylbenzyl halide and vinyl tris(methoxyethoxy) silane; and (4) an imidazoline of formula 3 where R is stearyl, vinyl tris(methoxyethoxy) silane and acetic acid; and the coating of glass fibres with size (1). |
