titleOfInvention | Acrylic modifiers for vinyl halide polymers |
abstract | 1357797 Two-stage acrylic copolymers; vinyl halide polymer compositions ROHM & HAAS CO 9 July 1971 [17 July 1970 20 Jan 1971] 32296/71 Heading C3P Sequentially produced copolymers are obtained by polymerizing a final, rigid thermoplastic portion comprising at least 35% by weight of a (meth)acrylate or an optionally substituted styrene and having a molecular weight of 400,000 to 5,000,000 on to particles of a first non-cross-linked soft portion comprising at least 25% by weight of a C 1-18 alkyl acrylate and having a molecular weight up to 450,000. The copolymers are desirably incorporated into vinyl halide polymers. In examples, conventional emulsion techniques are employed, with filtering and concentration after the first stage followed by addition of further water and other ingredients prior to the second stage, to produce copolymers of (a) n-butylacrylate, optionally with styrene, ethylacrylate and methmethacrylate and (in a comparative experiment) butylenediacrylate and (b) methyl methacrylate, optionally with ethylacrylate, butylacrylate and styrene, in each case in appropriate proportions. The acrylic copolymers are added to polyvinyl chloride, which may include tin stabilizer and lubricants. |
