titleOfInvention | Preparation of siliceous material particularly for strengthening polymers |
abstract | 1357071 Modified phyllosilicates GERDEC GROUPEMENT & D'ETUDES DE RECHERCHES ET DE DEVELOPPEMENT EMCCFE 11 July 1972 [13 July 1971] 32389/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A phyllosilicate mineral is treated in a process comprising, as a first step, acid hydrolysis of the mineral, and as a second step, chlorination of the hydrolysed mineral whereby chlorine atoms are fixed on the mineral. The hydrolysis may be achieved by reacting the mineral with HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 or CH 3 .COOH, preferably dissolved in a mixture of water with methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, acetone or MEK. The chlorination may be achieved using thionyl chloride or phosgene; the thionyl chloride may be dissolved in benzene, toluene, xylene, heptane or octane. As a third step the mineral may be grafted with organic radicals to form precursors for polymerization, e.g. by treatment with organo-metallic compounds or alcohols. Minerals specified are chrysotile, sepiolite, mica and vermiculite. |
