titleOfInvention | Butadiene polymerization catalysts |
abstract | 1355997 Multicomponent butadiene polymerization catalyst SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970 17 Oct 1970] 44482/71 Heading C3P Butadiene is polymerized in the presence of (i) one or more nickel compounds, (ii) a trialkyl aluminium compound, (iii) a benzotrifluoride compound of formula where R 1 to R 5 are hydrogen, halogen or an optionally fluorinated alkyl group, (iv) an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing a chloro- or fluoroalkyl group or an ester or anhydride thereof, an aluminocarboxylate or formula (R 6 COO) n Al(R 7 ) 3-n where R 6 is a chloro- or fluoroalkyl group, R; is an alkyl group and n is 1 to 3, or a hydroquinone dicarboxylate of the formula where R 8 to R 11 are hydrogen or halogen, and R 12 and R 13 are halogenated hydrocarbon groups, and (v) optionally water, to control molecular weight. The ingredients may be mixed in any order but a pre-mixing of components (ii) and (iii) in the presence of part of the monomer and then adding the remaining catalyst ingredients or vice versa is preferred. In examples, butadiene is polymerized in the presence of (i) nickel naphthenate, (ii) triethylaluminium, (iii) benzotrifluoride or 3-chloro-benzotrifluoride, (iv) trifluoro- or trichloroacetic acid, trifluoroacetic anhydride, perfluoropropionic acid, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropionic acid, 4-chlorophenyl trifluoroacetate, pentachlorophenyl-trichloroacetate, perfluoro-n-butyric acid and anhydride, ethyl trifluoroacetate, and a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid and ethyl trifluoroacetate, and (v), in some cases, water. |
