1355245 Non-elastomeric ethylene-olefin copolymers MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 May 1971 [29 May 1970 6 June 1970 26 Dec 1970] 18030/71 Heading C3P A process for the preparation of non-elastic copolymers comprising 99À5 to 80 mole per cent of ethylene and 0À5 to 20 mole per cent of at least one C 3-8 α-olefin, and having 3 to 100 side chain alkyl groups per 1000 chain carbon atoms, a density (d) of 0À900 to 0À945 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> and a melting point (T‹ C.) given by comprises copolymerizing the monomers in a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature not lower than the melting point of the resulting copolymer and in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) an organo aluminium compound and (b) a halogen or oxyhalogen compound of titanium or vanadium supported on a magnesium compound which is insoluble in the hydrocarbon solvent. The α-olefin may be propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, hexene-1 or octene-1. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously in the presence of hydrogen. The magnesium compound may be magnesium oxide, hydroxide, chloride, oxychloride, carbonate or aluminate. Examples describe the copolymerization in hexane in the presence of hydrogen of ethylene and propylene using (1 and 6) magnesium oxide/titanium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium, (2) magnesium aluminate/titanium tetrachloride and triisobutyl aluminium, (3 and 5) magnesium aluminate/titanium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium, and (7) magnesium hydroxide/ titanium tetrachloride/vanadium oxytrichloride and triethyl aluminium; of ethylene and butene-1 using (4) magnesium oxide/vanadium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium, (8, 10 and 11) magnesium oxide/titanium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium, (9) magnesium aluminate/titanium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium, and (13) magnesium hydroxide/ vanadium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium; of ethylene and hexene-1 using (12) magnesium chloride/titanium tetrachloride and diethyl aluminium chloride; and of ethylene and octene-1 using (14) magnesium hydroxide/ vanadium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium. |
