1354442 Polyolefin derivatives RHONEPROGIL 28 June 1972 [8 July 1971] 30289/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Lubricating and fuel oil additives are prepared by reacting diphenylolpropane with a succinic acid or anhydride substituted by a substantially saturated hydrocarbon radical of at least 30 carbon atoms derived from a polyolefin, and neutralizing the resulting product with an amine. The substituted succinic compound may be a reaction product of maleic acid or anhydride with polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyisobutylene or a chlorinated polyolefin. The amine may be a polyethylene polyamine. The esterification with diphenylol propane may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. pyridine, pyridine hydrochloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid or sulphuric acid, and an entraining solvent, e.g. xylene or toluene. In examples polyisobutylene/maleic anhydride reaction products are esterified with diphenylol propane and the products neutralized with (1,2,4,6 and 7)tetraethylene pentamine and (5) triethylene tetramine. |
