1354355 Hydraulic fluid compositions OLIN CORP 20 May 1971 [12 April 1971] 16044/71 Heading C5F An hydraulic fluid composition comprises (A) from 20-96% by weight, based on the total composition of one or more borate esters of the formulae: [R<SP>1</SP>(OR<SP>a</SP>) y O] 3 B where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R<SP>a</SP> is C 2 -C 4 alkylene; and y is 2, 3, or 4; or [R<SP>1</SP>(OCH 2 CHR<SP>2</SP>) m -(OCH 2 CHR<SP>3</SP>) n O] 3 B where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; one of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen and the other methyl; and m and n are integers whose sum within each oxyalkylene chain is from 2-20; or [R<SP>1</SP>(R<SP>g</SP>)O] 3 B where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R<SP>g</SP> is a heteric oxyalkylene chain of the formula [-(OCH 2 CH 2 ) r (OCH 2 CHCH 3 ) s -] where r and s are integers whose sum within each oxyalkylene chain is not more than 20 and wherein the weight percent of oxyethylene units within each chain is at least 20 based on the total weight of the chain; or where R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP>, R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are each H or CH 3 ; T 1 , T 2 and T 3 are each C 1 -C 4 alkyl; and m and n are integers, whose sum within each oxyalkylene chain is 2-20 with the proviso that in no more than two of the chains is the sum of m and n the same; (B) from 2-40% by weight, based on the total composition, of one or more bis-(glycol ether) formals of the formula: [R<SP>b</SP>O(R<SP>a</SP>O) x ] 2 CH 2 where R<SP>b</SP> is C 1 -C 6 alkyl; R<SP>a</SP> is C 2 -C 4 alkylene; and x is an integer of from 1-5; and (C) from 0-78% by weight, based on the total composition of one or more diluents selected from (i) glycol ethers and diethers of the formula R[OR<SP>11</SP>] y OR<SP>1</SP> where R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R<SP>11</SP> is C 2 -C 4 alkylene; and y is 2, 3 or 4; (ii) glycols and polyglycols having a molecular weight of from 60-450; and (iii) saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols having from 6-13 carbon atoms. The composition suitably also includes 0À2-6% by weight of corrosion inhibitor and 0À001-1% by weight of antioxidant. Many examples of each of the above classes of compound are specified. |
