abstract 1353485 Monocrystalline films ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970 (2)] 22957/71 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division H3] A monocrystalline garnet film J 3 Q 5 O 12 is deposited on a monocrystalline garnet substrate J<SP>1</SP> 3 Q<SP>1</SP> 5 O 12 , wherein J is one or more of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tl, Yb, Lu, La, Y; Q is iron alone or with one or more of Al, Ga, In, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn; J<SP>1</SP> is one or more of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tl, Yb, Lu, La, Y, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Cd, Li, Na, K; and Q<SP>1</SP> is one or more of Al, Ga, In, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Rh, Zr, Hf, Mo, W, Nb, Ta. The exemplified combinations are Y 3 Ga 0,5 Fe 4.5 O 12 and Y 1.5 Gd 1.5 Fe 5 O 12 on Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 . The film may be deposited in a T-shaped reactor, the substrate being mounted in the horizontal limb through which He + O 2 flows. The source materials, e.g. chlorides are held in the verticle limb in crucibles which can be heated and moved individually, HCl and He being introduced to carry the chloride vapours. Several comparative examples in which the films and substrates are orthoferrites JQO 3 are also provided.
