titleOfInvention Carbamates of p-hydroxybenzoates
abstract 1353301 N-alkylcarbamates of p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 24 Jan 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 3263/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] The invention comprises compounds of general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or a C 1 -C 5 alkyl group, R<SP>11</SP> is a C 1 -C 18 alkyl group, Y is a C 1 -C 5 alkyl or alkoxy group, Y<SP>1</SP> is C 1-5 alkoxy, Z is H or X<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 -C 5 alkyl group, m is 0, 1 or 2, n is 2-6, and m<SP>1</SP> is 1 or 2. Examples of the compounds of the invention, which may be prepared e.g. by reacting an ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with an isocyanate in the presence of a small amount of an amine, are ethyl-3-methoxy- 4 - hydroxybenzoate N - methyl carbamate, methyl 2,6 - dimethoxy - 4 - hydroxybenzoate N-methyl carbamate, ethylene glycol mono-phydroxy benzoate N-methyl carbamate and ethylene glycol mono p-hydroxybenzoate bis- (N-methylcarbamate). The compounds of the invention have application in coating compositions for rendering such compositions resistant to attack by fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms.
