titleOfInvention Flame retardant polymer compositions
abstract 1351840 Flame-retardant polymer compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 7 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 31956/71 Headings C3C C3G and C3P Flame-retardant polymer compositions comprise (1) phosphorus of specific gravity greater than 2 and (2) either (a) a normally flammable polymer of at least 50 mole per cent of a C 2 -C 12 α-olefin together with a halogen-substituted compound inert to the phosphorus, or (b) a normally flammable polymer of at least 50 mole per cent of a halogen-substituted C 2 -C 12 α-olefin or of nuclear chlorinated or brominated mono-vinylidene aromatic monomer, or normally flammable halohydrocarbon polymer or normally self extinguishing halohydrocarbon polymer rendered flammable by additives such as plasticisers, optionally with a halogensubstituted compound inert to the phosphorus. The phosphorus may be red, violet or black phosphorus, and the halogenated compound may be a chlorinated or brominated hydrocarbon or ester. Many suitable materials are listed and examples describe compositions comprising red phosphorus together with (1) polyethylene and chlorinated paraffin wax; (2) polyethylene and hexabromobenzene or chlorinated paraffin wax; ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and hexabromobenzene, chlorinated paraffin wax, tetrabromobisphenol-A, bis(2,3,3-tribromo-allyl) ether thereof, bis(p - 2,3,3 - tribromoallyloxyphenyl) - 1,2- dibromoethene, 2,4,6 - tribromophenyl 2,3,3- tribromoallyl ether, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, tribromoneopentyl alcohol, tris- (tribromoneopentyl) phosphate, tetrabromobenzene, 1,2- and 1,4 - dichlorotetrabromobenzenes, tri- and pentabromophenol, pentabromomonochloro- and hexabromooyclohexanes, deca- and hexabromodiphenyl ethers, and hexachlorobenzene; polypropylene and hexabromobenzene; and chlorostyrene /styrene/polybutadiene graft copolymer, optionally with perchloropentacyclodecane; (3) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with hexabromobenzene or chlorinated paraffin wax; (4) polyvinyl chloride and diootyl phthalate; (5) chlorinated polyethylene and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A; (6) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, hexabromobenzene and chlorinated paraffin wax; and (7) polychlorostyrene. Composition (1) is foamed with 1,2-dichlorotetrafluoroethane.
