abstract 1350883 Bis-stilbenes CIBA-GEIGY AG 3 March 1972 [5 March 1971 3 Feb 1972] 10055/72 Addition to 1247934 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 C5 and D1] Novel compounds of Formula I wherein R 1 and R 2 are identical or different and denote alkyl with 5 to 18 carbon atoms, substituted alkyl with a total of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, or alkenyl with 3 or 4 carbon atoms, X 1 and X 2 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, alkoxy with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, alkenyl with 3 or 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Y 1 and Y 2 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, halogen, alkenyl with 3 or 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a represents hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the para-positions are free of alkoxy groups or R 1 O- and R 2 O- groups, are prepared by reacting about one mol. equivalent of a compound of Formula II with about one mol. equivalent of each of the compounds of Formulµ III and IV in which formulµ X 1 , X 2 , Y 1 , Y 2 are as defined above, R 1 <SP>1</SP>, and R 2 <SP>1</SP> are as defined under R 1 and R 2 above with the exception of alkyl groups containing modified carboxyl groups, and one of the symbols Z 1 and Z 2 denotes a -CHO group and the other denotes one of the group of the formulµ wherein R represents an optionally substituted alkyl radical, aryl radical, cycloalkyl radical or aralkyl radical, and subsequently esterifying or amidating the carboxyl groups in known manner. Aldehyde ethers of Formulµ III and IV in which Z 2 is CHO, are prepared by etherification of the corresponding hydroxy benzaldehydes.
