titleOfInvention | Thermosetting and thermoset polydiene polymers |
abstract | 1350632 Thermosetting polymers and compositions TRW Inc 28 May 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 17936/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] Thermosetting elastomeric polymers are produced by reaction of (1) a polydiene having at least 50% of its olefinic unsaturation in the form of pendant vinyl groups and containing a plurality of hydroxyl, amino or mercapto groups, (2) an organic acid anhydride capable of reacting with the functional groups of the polydiene, and (3) a polyfunctional organic chain extender capable of reacting with carboxylic acid groups, the reaction product having dispersed therein an organic peroxide free radical initiator. The products cure by cross-linking and cyclization on heating. Many suitable anhydrides are listed, including dianhydrides, and the chain extender may be a diepoxide, diimine, diimide, diol, diaziridine or dimercaptan. In Example 1, the reaction mixture comprises 1,2-polybutadiene diol, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, an alicyclic diepoxy carboxylate, triethylene diamine and dicumyl peroxide. Example 2 has 1,2-polybutadiene diol, chlorendic anhydride, the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and dicumyl peroxide. The above resins may also contain fillers and reinforcing materials, several being specified. Example 3 discloses the resin of Example 2 together with silica flour and small amounts of MgO, calcium stearate and a silicone. |
