abstract 1348953 Paper NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 10 March 1972 [7 April 1971] 11243/72 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] A paper of improved pigment retention is obtained by incorporating with a bleached sulphite pulp, which is subsequently made into sheets on a Williams standard sheet mold and tested for TiO 2 pigment retention, a starch phosphate ester obtained by reacting a starch base with an O-carboxyaryl phosphate of the general formula: wherein R is phenylene, naphthylene, alkyl substituted phenylene, alkyl substituted naphthylene, halogen substituted phenylene, or halogen substituted naphthylene and X is hydrogen or a cation and the X's may be the same or different, and wherein the carboxylic group attached to R is in the ortho position with respect to the phosphate ester group, e.g. salicyl phosphate.
