titleOfInvention Latex reinforced flexible polyurethane foam
abstract 1348870 Latex reinforced polyurethane foams GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 11 Aug 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 37608/72 Headings C3R and C3C Flexible polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate, water and a polyether or polyester polyol of M.W. from 1000 to 6000 in the presence of from 1 to 20 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of the polyol of a polymer having a glass transition temperature of at least 50‹ C., the polymer being added to the reaction mixture in the form of an unfoamed latex of up to 65% by weight solids content, and having a particle size of from 200 to 800 Angstroms. The reaction mixture may also contain auxiliary blowing agents, catalysts and foam stabilizers. Preferred latices are those of polymethylmethacrylate, polystyrene and vinylchlorideacrylate copolymers. The latex may be added to the polyol prior to blending with the polyisocyanate. Excess water may be removed from the unfoamed reaction mixture by vacuum stripping. If desired, it is not necessary to add a separate water stream in the production of the foam, the water present in the latex being used as foaming agent as well as for the carrier of the polymer particles.
