titleOfInvention Polyesters
abstract 1348848 Polyester fibres KURARAY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970 (2)] 25039/71 Heading B5B Also in Division C3] The resistance to pilling of fibres or articles made therefrom of a polyester prepared by condensing an aromatic dicarboxylic with a glycol and adding to the condensation mixture before condensation is complete (a) Y/15(Y - 2) to Y/Y - 2 mole per cent based on the units of the polyester which are derived from an acid of a polyalkylene oxide of the formula in which Y is an integer of 3-6, R is a Y valent hydrocarbyl group or Y-valent residue of an aliphatic ether formed by removing Y hydrogen atoms from carbon atoms not attached to oxygen in the ether, each R<SP>1</SP> is independently a hydrogen atom or methyl or ethyl group, R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an acetyl group or a hydrocarbyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms and containing a carboxyl or hydroxy group or an ester thereof, n is an integer of 1-3 and x is an integer of 1-50, and (b) up to Y times the molar amount of (a) of an ester-forming compound having at least 7 carbon atoms and containing one carboxy, hydroxy, meth- or eth-oxycarbonyl, or acetoxy or propionyloxyl group, is improved by subjecting the fibres or articles made therefrom to radiation with light or heattreatment to reduce the intrinsic viscosity of the polyester by at least 0À05. Heat-treatment may be performed using hot air at 100-200‹ C. Ultra-violet ray radiation may be effected at 80‹ C. for 6 or 8 hours. The aromatic dicarboxylic acid used to prepare the polyester may be terephthalic acid, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, a diphenyldicarboxylic acid, a diphenyl ether dicarboxylic acid, ethylene-1,2-bis-(pcarboxy phenoide) or p,p<SP>1</SP>-sulphonyldibenzoic acid and the glycol component used is a polymethylene glycol having 2-10 carbon atoms, cyclohexane - 1,4 - dimethanol, p - xylylene diol or 1,4 - bis - (# - hydroxyethoxy)benzene.
