titleOfInvention | Process for applying protective coatings to metal articles |
abstract | 1347557 Coating metal articles MECANOBUNDY GmbH 21 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43913/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] A process for coating a metal article to give protection against chemical and mechanical action comprises galvanising the article by electrodepositing a homogenous zinc coating with a fine crystalline structure, forming a chromate layer thereon in a chromic acid solution having a pH value below 2, rinsing off the chromic acid solution residues with water, coating the chromated article in wet condition with synthetic plastics material of non-waxy character by means of a dispersion of said material; and then heat treating the so coated article at a temperature of not less than 100C and sufficient to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium and, if such curing be necessary, to cure the plastics material coating. The article may be a small pipe or several joined lengths of such pipes used in vehicle brake systems, made of iron or copper coated iron, The tubing is first degreased and pickled before being galvanised in a bath containing sulphuric acid having a pH of 3.3 and 170g 5g zinc, 1.5g 0.3g aluminium, 6g lg boric acid, 3.3g 0.3g zinc chloride, the electrolysis being performed at 50 to 55C at a current density of 40 to 100 A/dm<SP>2</SP>. In order to provide a fine crystalline zinc coat, organic additives are also present. The galvanising is repeated twice before the tubing is run into a chromic acid solution with a pH of 1.5, in which chloride ions are present in a proportion of less than 1 mole chloride ions per mole of chromic acid. Thereafter the tube is rinsed and a plastics material is coated onto the still wet tube from an aqueous dispersion (e.g. by dipping), the plastics material being, for example, epoxide resins, phenol resins, styrene polymers, acrylic resins and other non-waxy plastics. A continuous length of tube may be fed through apparatus for carrying out the above process, arranged as a production line. |
