titleOfInvention Transparent high molecular weight polyamides
abstract 1346455 Polyamides BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 21870/71 Heading C3R A transparent high M.W. polyamide consists of units (I): where the amide groups on rings A and C are o or p to the isopropylidene groups and on ring B the two isopropylidene groups are in the 1,3- or 1,4-position; R is H or C 1-4 alkyl; R 1 is H, C 1-4 alkyl, or halogen; R 2 is a divalent substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, or araliphatic hydrocarbon radical; in R 2 there may be several rings which may be fused or joined by, e.g., -O-, -S-, -SO 2 -, or -C(R 3 R 4 )-, where R 3 and R 4 are H or C 1-4 alkyl. Relative solution viscosity of the polyamide is 1À3-4À5. There may be two distinct units of general Formula (I) occurring in statistical sequence. The polyamide may be made by condensing the corresponding diamine or polyurethane with the appropriate dicarboxylic acid or its ester or halide. The reaction may be performed at 150-350‹ C. in the melt, in an inert atmosphere, optionally in the presence of carbonic acid diesters or 0À0001-3% wt. of basic catalyst(s), the polycondensation being completed under reduced pressure; or in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, acetamide or sulphoxide at 20-160‹ C., e.g. in cyclohexanone/ water. The polyamides can be extrusion- or injection-moulded, or worked up from solution, and can form films, foils, fibres, shaped products, or coatings.
