abstract 1345339 13 - Polycarbonalkyl - 16 - methylgonenes AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORP 23 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 44339/71 Heading C2U [Also in Division A5] Novel steroids of the formula (wherein R 1 is C 2-18 alkyl and R 3 is H or C 1-6 alkyl) are prepared by hydrolysis of steroids of the formula wherein R 4 is C 1-6 alkyl or is a C 3-7 cycloaliphatic radical. Starting materials of the general formula are prepared by Birch reduction of the corresponding #<SP>1</SP>'<SP>3</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP>-trienes, in turn prepared by reduction of the corresponding 17-ones. Starting materials of the general formula are prepared similarly, as are the corresponding 16α-methyl compounds. Also disclosed is the preparation of compounds analogous to those first disclosed above, of the formula by oxidizing the first starting materials disclosed above to give the corresponding 17-ones of the formula reacting these either with MgBrC#CBrMg to give steroids of the formula or with lithium acetylide-ethylenediamine complex to give steroids of the formula and hydrolysing these to give the required products in which the 16-methyl substituent is respectively in the beta or the alpha configuration. In examples illustrating the above processes, the starting materials, intermediates and products are in racemic form. Specification 1,277,760 is referred to.
