abstract | 1343642 Coated zinc orthophosphate MAY & BAKER Ltd 27 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 11907/71 Heading C1A The refractive index of planar particles of a zinc orthophosphate of formula Zn 3 (PO 4 )xH 2 O in which X is 0 to 8 is increased by depositing thereon zinc sulphide formed in situ by heating an aqueous water soluble zinc salt (e.g. zinc sulphate, chloride, nitrate, acetate or formate) and a water soluble thiosulphate (e.g. sodium thiosulphate) at a temperature of at least 65 C. and at a pH above 3. An anionic surface active agent (e.g. sodium bis-[2-ethylhexyl] sulphosuccinate or sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate) and bubbles of an inert gas may be present during the deposition process. The zinc orthophosphate may be prepared by mixing a zinc salt, e.g. zinc sulphate and a water soluble phosphate, e.g. disodium hydrogen phosphate optionally in the presence of an anionic surface active agent at a temperature from 85 C. to 97 C. and optionally raising the temperature to backing point and then cooling the mixture. The so coated orthophosphate particles may be of 5-75 microns diameter and may be heated in the presence of oxygen to at least 600 C. |
