titleOfInvention | Process for the joint manufacture of aliphatic aldehydes and carboxylic anhydrides |
abstract | 1342857 Aldehydes; carboxylic anhydrides KNAPSACK AG 4 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 36577/72 Heading C2C Aliphatic aldehydes and carboxylic anhydrides are jointly prepared by passing a vaporous mixture of an aliphatic carboxylic acid alkenyl ester of up to 7C, and aliphatic carboxylic acid of up to 4C and, optionally, an inert gas at 250‹ to 500‹ C., under pressure if desired, over an acid catalyst consisting of silicic acid, an acid aluminosilicate or an inert carrier (e.g. Al 2 O 3 , pumice or active carbon) impregnated with H 3 PO 4 or one or more heteropolyacids. The silicic acid or aluminosilicate may also be thus impregnated. The catalyst may also contain PdCl 2 . Examples react vinyl acetate and acetic acid to give acetaldehyde, acetic anhydride (and acetone by-product), allyl acetate and acetic acid to give propionaldehyde and acetic anhydride, and vinyl propionate and propionic acid to give acetaldehyde and propionic anhydride. |
