titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of polypropene compositions in the form of a powder which can be processed into products of fallin-weight impact strength |
abstract | 1342647 Polypropylene compositions SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 19 April 1971 [10 Feb 1970] 21315/71 Heading C3P Polypropylene compositions comprising (A) isotactic polypropylene of intrinsic viscosity of 1 to 4À5 dl/g. and (B) rubbery ethylene/propylene copolymer containing 20 to 90 weight per cent of ethylene, the weight ratio of B to A + B being 0À08 to 0À20 and the composition having a melt index of 0À1 to 15 measured at 230‹ C. according to BS 2782 Part I, are prepared by preparing the polymers by suspension polymerization in a liquid diluent, mixing the suspensions during or after preparation and separating the diluent, polymer A being prepared by polymerization in the presence of a catalyst comprising (C) an organometallic compound and (D) a component prepared by mixing a dialkyl aluminium chloride and titanium tetrachloride in a molar ratio of 0À5 to 1À2 in a paraffinic diluent with stirring at a temperature below -5‹C. and subsequently raising the temperature to 70 to 200‹ C. with continued stirring. Preferably B is prepared in a suspension of A containing still active catalyst, but it may be prepared separately with a similar or different catalyst. Preferred diluents are C 4-10 alkanes. The catalysts may be dosed with very small amounts of water during the polymerization and hydrogen may be used as molecular weight regulator. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously and examples describe the continuous successive polymerizations of propylene and ethylene/propylene mixtures in the presence of diethyl aluminium chloride and titanium trichloride prepared from titanium tetrachloride and diethyl aluminium chloride. The products can be processed into products of improved impact strength. |
