abstract | 1342043 Graft polymer/pigment or dye dispersions RICOH KK 11 Jan 1971 [24 Jan 1970] 1179/71 Heading C3G [Also in Division G2] Electrostatographic liquid developers comprise a dispersion in an organic liquid having less than 50% by wt. aromatic component(s), a volume resistivity of more than 10<SP>9</SP> ohm cm. and a dielectric constant of less than 3, of a toner comprising pigment or dye particles dispersed in a graft copolymer having a stem-polymer moiety A insoluble in the liquid and a graftpolymerized moiety C insoluble in the liquid. Moiety A may be a polymer of styrene, vinyltoluene or α-methylstyrene optionally with an acrylate, methacrylate or divinyl benzene; B may be a long chain vinyl ether or ester, acrylate or methacrylate; C may be a glycidyl, hydroxyalkyl or aminoethyl acrylate or methacrylate, an acrylamide, a substituted styrene, allylalcohol, vinyl pyridine or acrylonitrile. The examples describe the preparation of developers and also the grafting of (1) lauryl methacrylate and dimethylaminomethacrylate on to polystyrene, (2) tridecyl acrylate and hydroxyethylmethacrylate on to copoly-(styrene/isobutyl methacrylate) and (3) hexylmethacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate on to copoly-(styrene/ butadiene using conventional catalysts. Other graft copolymers are prepared similarly. |
