titleOfInvention | Process for production of 4,4-dibromobenzil |
abstract | 1340610 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Dibromobenzil; imidazolones CIBA-GEIGY AG and AGRIPAT SA 7 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 31975/71 Heading C2C 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Dibromobenzil is prepared by (a) reacting benzoin with urea in the presence of an inert water-insoluble organic solvent at 100-200 C.; (b) brominating the resulting 4,5-diphenylimidazol-2-one to obtain 4,5<SP>1</SP>-bis(4<SP>1</SP>-bromophenyl)-imdidazol-2-one and (c) oxidizing this bromination product. Step (a) may be carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. benzoic acid, oxalic acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid. Suitable water-insoluble organic solvents are, for example, o-dichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. The bromination step may be carried out with the usual brominating agents for aromatic substitution, e.g. bromine, N-bromosuccinimide, sodium bromide in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, potassium bromate or sodium bromide in the presence of acetic acid or potassium bromate in the presence of hydrobromic acid. Suitable oxidizing agents for step (c) are, for example, nitric acid, chorine or aqueous or acidic solutions of bromine. |
