abstract 1339652 Making turbine blades UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 1 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970] 45807/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] A method of making filament reinforced composite articles, e.g. gas turbine blades 10 having a filament reinforced matrix of aluminium or magnesium or their alloys comprises diffusion bonding titanium or titanium alloy foil 16 to the outer surface of the matrix 14. A sheet of titanium or titanium alloy foil is first placed on a mandrel, heated to 204-316‹ C. and plasma sprayed on one side with the matrix material in an argon atmosphere. The foil is allowed to cool before it is removed from the mandrel and it is hot pressed to the matrix 14 in a non- oxidizing atmosphere. The diffusion bond is preferably made under conditions at which no continuous brittle intermetallic layer is formed, e.g. at 450-550‹ C. for one hour. The matrix 14 is reinforced with silicon carbide coated boron filaments 12; but they may alternatively be of silicon carbide or plain boron.
