abstract | 1339324 Polyarylene oxadiazole solutions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 3712/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division B5] A solution, having inherent viscosity > 1À5, of of polyarylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole (P) in oleum or sulphuric acid, in which the concentration of (P)# 7% wt., is made by heating in oleum of strength 5-20% a hydrazine salt and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof, or a dihydrazide of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with or without an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof. Derivatives include amides or nitriles. (P) has repeating unit where R is arylene. At the end of the reaction the excess free SO 3 may be <12% wt. of the final solution. The acid may be iso- and/or terephthalic acid, the salt may be hydrazine sulphate, which may be formed in situ from hydrazine or hydrazine hydrate, (P) may be isolated by pouring the cooled solution on to water or ice and recovering the precipitate. Or fibres may be made by directly spinning the oleum solution of (P) into an aqueous coagulating bath, e.g., containing 10-20% wt. H 2 SO 4 , Or the solution may be spun into a film. |
