titleOfInvention Paper coating composition coagulatable by heating
abstract 1338123 Polymer compositions SCOTT PAPER CO 23 Aug 1971 39498/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C4] An aqueous paper-coating composition coagulatable by heating comprises an aqueous slurry of at least 30% by wt. solids containing a mineral pigment, an ionic dispersant in an amount to maintain the pigment stably dispersed at 35-100‹ C., an adhesive binder, and a counteracting agent for the dispersant which is insoluble at 25‹ C. but solubilizes and ionizes at 35-100‹ C. causing coagulation of the composition. Preferably the dispersant is anionic and the counteracting agent is cationic or an acid or base, e.g. cationic starch, aluminium citrate or tartrate, ferric phosphate, m-toluic acid, benzoic acid or salicylic acid. With a cationic dispersant a carboxymethylated starch may be used. Synthetic binders disclosed in Table IV include latices of butadienestyrene, carboxyl-modified vinyl acetate and acrylic polymers. In Examples 1-5 the binders are (1) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex; (2) a butadiene-styrene latex + dextrinated starch; (3) latex as (1) + dextrinated starch; (4), (5) as (2). In Examples 1, 3, 4, 5 tetrasodium pyrophosphate is the anionic dispersant and (1) cationic starch, (3) Al citrate, (4) mtoluic acid, (5) a zinc-ammine complex the counteractants; in Example 2 polyethyleneimine is counteracted by a carboxymethylated starch. Other ingredients are clay pigment, potassium oleate and tributyl phosphate.
