titleOfInvention | Container for the storage and transportation of radioactive gases |
abstract | 1337480 Pipe couplings; pipe stoppers; valves COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 April 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 22549/71 Headings F2G F2P and F2V [Also in Division B8] A metal container for radioactive gases comprises a cylindrical body having top and bottom parts of sheet-metal, the top end having welded to it a flange 4, Fig. 3, including a valve 5 with a metal sealing bellows 54, Fig. 4, and head 20, a metal gasket 23, Fig. 3, sealing the valve to the flange. The valve head 20 is carried by a rod 22 prevented from turning by an axial slot 42 engaged by a pin 41. A screw-threaded end 27 of the control-rod 22 engages a threaded bush 28 fast with a socket 29 receiving a handle and torque limiter (not shown) for adjustment of the valve 5. The pin 41 is carried in an inner bush 32 contacted by a sealing knife edge 33, and is secured by a further bush 34 screwed and locked on to the valve body 16. The valve 5 has an externally tapped outlet 62 for a cap 43 which has been subjected to ionic nitridation. The valve 5 is connected to a transfer line by removing the cap 43 and replacing it by a nut (45), Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), turnable on the end of a junction-piece having at its other end a meta bellows (46) and a flange (47), or a ball 48 of a ball joint. Leakage of radioactive gas through the valve bellows 54, Fig. 4, can be discovered at an aperture 50 by a radioactivity detector. A removable safety cap 7, Fig. 3, encloses the valve, the safety cap incorporating a plug 12 removed initially so that a radioactivity detector can be used to determine if there has been any leakage of the gas. The container (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), is formed by first cold working and then connecting by argon welding a central cylinder of stainless steel with two ends, electrolytically polishing, degreasing, rinsing and drying the body, treating the flange 4, the valve 5 and gasket 23 in the same way, and welding the flange to the top end of the container with argon flushing, the gas being fed in through coaxial inlet and outlet pipes connected to the outlet 62. |
