abstract 1336254 Modulating light ACHESON INDUSTRIES Inc 17 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 7096/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division B5] A method of spacing apart by a predetermined amount two components of an assembly comprises applying a layer of photoresist material to at least one of the components, making selected areas of the photoresist layer(s), exposing the photoresist layer(s), removing unwanted photoresist material and bonding the two components together. In a preferred embodiment, an assembly for use in the production of a liquid crystal display device is made by applying to at least one of a pair of plates selected areas of which are coated with conductive material and at least one of which is transparent a layer of negative working photoresist material; masking selected areas of the layer(s) of photoresist material; exposing the photoresist material and removing unexposed photoresist material so to leave adhering to the or each plate a spacer adapted to provide one or more enclosures for liquid crystal material, and bonding the plates together with the spacer(s) therebetween. In a similar embodiment, a positive working photoresist material is used and the exposed photoresist material removed. A negative working photoresist is defined as one wherein the molecules cross-link in exposed areas and become insoluble in developers. A positive working photoresist is defined as being one wherein the exposed areas become acidic and may be dissolved in alkaline developers. Specified liquid crystals which become turbid or change colour on the application of an electric field and which are preferably introduced between the plates subsequent to bonding are p - ethoxybenzylidene - p - aminobenzonitrile and anisylidene-p-aminophenylacetate. The plates may be of glass, the conductive material may be chromium, tin oxide, aluminium or gold and the bonding agent may be an epoxy resin. The liquid crystal display device shown comprises a rear glass plate 1 bearing reflective electrodes, a front glass plate 2 bearing reflective electrodes, a photoresist spacer 3 and liquid crystal material 4.
