titleOfInvention | Flame retardant composition |
abstract | 1336063 Phosphate-modified aminoplast resins; textile-treating compositions UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 Feb 1971 5256/71 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions C2 and D1] A flame retardant composition comprises the reaction product of a hydroxyalkyl polyphosphate of the formula wherein R is the divalent residue of a vicinal epoxide, Z<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-5 alkoxy group or Z, Z is a group HO(RO) m - or and m is at least one, with an aminoplast durable press resin. The polyphosphate may be obtained by reaction of an alkylene oxide with a polyphosphoric acid. Suitable resins include N- methylol derivatives of ureas, amides, carbamates, cyclic ureas, and melamine, and ethers thereof. The reaction product is preferably formed in situ on a fibrous substrate by heating the reactants to 70-200‹, these having been applied in aqueous solution which may also contain a curing agent for the resin. In examples the polyphosphates used are obtained by reaction of about 14 moles of propylene oxide, ethylene oxide, or epichlorhydrin, or a mixture of these, with tetraphosphoric acid, or of propylene oxide with dibutyl pyrophosphoric acid: the resins used are a methylol melamine-urea mixture, trimethylolmelamine, dimethoxymethylurea, dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, and a mixture of dimethylolethyleneurea and trimethylolmelamine; the polyphosphate and resin are dissolved in water with Zn(NO 3 ) 2 catalyst, and optionally a polyethylene softener and/or an ethoxylated fatty alcohol surfactant, and applied to cellulosic fabrics: the fabrics are dried at 140‹ C. and cured at about 170‹ C. |
