titleOfInvention Polyacrylate flocculants
abstract 1333275 Polymerizing acrylic salts DOW CHEMICALS CO 5 Aug 1971 36911/71 Heading C3P In the polymerization of acrylates or methacrylates of alkali metals or ammonium in aqueous solution there is added (a) sufficient alkali to give a pH of at least 10À7 up to a maximum of 15-1% dependent in inverse proportion to the monomer concentration of 10-35% or (b) where the monomer is an ammonium salt, at least 0À1% of ammonium hydroxide based on the weight of solution, up to a maximum of 15-5% dependent in inverse proportion to the monomer concentration of 10-40%, the solution is purged of oxygen and polymerization is effected at 0-100‹ C. in the presence of an initiator. Preferably an alkali metal or ammonium salt is also added. The products are used as flocculants
