titleOfInvention | Oxidative catalytic dehydrocyclization of substituted aromatic compounds |
abstract | 1332264 Heterocyclic compounds SNAM PROGETTI SpA 30 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 45675/71 Addition to 1320029 Heading C2C Compounds having the general Formula (I) where each of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP>, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, nitro, cyano, amino, alkoxy, hydroxy, hydrosulphide or -SO 3 H group, or any two of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are combined and form a divalent group and, optionally the other two of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are combined to form another divalent group, X is an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom or an -NH- or -NR<SP>5</SP>- group, R<SP>5</SP> is an alkyl or aryl group, and R<SP>6</SP> is a divalent hydrocarbon radical containing at least two carbon atoms and with two or three of its carbon atoms forming part of the ring containing X and the ring containing R<SP>6</SP> and X is aromatic in nature; are prepared by feeding (a) oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and (b) a compound having the Formula (II) where R is an alkyl group having at least two carbon atoms and Y is -OH, -SH, -NH 2 or NHR<SP>5</SP>, to a reactor operating at an elevated temperature and provided with a catalyst; subjecting the reaction products to heat exchange with the reactants being fed to the reactor; then separating the cooled reaction products into (i) at least one liquid phase containing the heterocyclic product and (ii) a gaseous phase comprising a suspension in gas of liquid particles; and washing the gaseous phase with fresh starting material of Formula II being fed to the reactor, whereby the suspended liquid particles are entrained in the starting material and removed from the gas. Examples are given of the preparation of indole from o-ethylaniline, and mention is also made of the preparation of benzofuran from o-ethylphenol, benzothiophene from o-ethylthiophenol, scatole from o-isopropylaniline and quinoline from o-propylaniline. |
