abstract | 1330824 Methylenation process F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 24 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13878/72 Heading C2C A process for the manufacture of aromatic methylene dioxy compounds of the general formula comprises reacting a dihydroxy compound of general formula with methylene chloride in the presence of a strongly basic amine of general formula wherein X represents a group (in which case R 1 to R 6 each represent a C 1-7 alkyl group or R 1 and R 2 , R 3 and R 4 and R 5 and R 6 together with the N atom to which they are attached represent a pyrrolidine or piperidine ring) or a -O-R 7 group (in which R 1 , R 2 to R 4 and R 7 each represent a C 1-7 alkyl group). Examples of the amines are tris-(dimethylamino)methane, tris-(dipyrrolidino) methane, tris-(piperidine) methane, bis-(dimethylamino) - t - butoxymethane and bis - (dimethylamino) methoxymethane. The methylation is preferably carried out at the reflux temperature of methylene chloride and the reaction time is usually 6 to 24 hours. |
