abstract 1330758 Oxide coated TiO 2 BRITISH TITAN Ltd 13 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 11824/71 Heading C1N TiO 2 is coated with at least one hydrous oxide by precipitating the oxide from a water-soluble compound thereof in an aqueous dispersion of the TiO 2 in the presence of an alcohol containing at least two OH groups. Exemplified alcohols are ethylene glycol, 1,2- and 1,3-propane diol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,3-pentane diol, 1,3- and 1,6- hexane diol, glycerol, and trimethylol ethane. The oxide may be of Al, Ti, Ce, Zr, Zn, Si, and may be precipitated from compounds such as Al sulphate, nitrate or chloride, Ti sulphate or chloride, Zr sulphate or oxychloride, Na aluminate or silicate. The alcohol may be added before or after the addition of the metal compound and before or during the addition of the acid or alkali precipitating agent. The product may be filtered, washed, dried and fluid energy milled.
