titleOfInvention Alternating polymer
abstract 1329117 Alternating copolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 11 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 59167/70 Heading C3P Novel copolymers contain units derived from at least one monomer of each of three types A 1 , A 2 and B, as defined below, and have a structure in which units of type B alternate with those of type A 1 , or A 2 . The monomers have formulĀµ (A 1 ) R<SP>1</SP>CH = CR<SP>2</SP>-OR<SP>3</SP> or (B) R<SP>8</SP>CH = CR<SP>9</SP>-Q wherein Q is -CN or -CO.Y<SP>1</SP>; Y<SP>1</SP> is -Z<SP>1</SP>R, -Z<SP>1</SP>(Me) 1 / k , -NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP>, -R or -Hal; Z<SP>1</SP> is O or S; Me is ammonium or a metal of Group I or II having valency k; R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are each H or a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon group and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> together may comprise a divalent C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon group; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> may each be a non- polymerizable C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon group, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> may also be H or a halogen and at least one of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> must be H; R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> may each be a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon group, H or a halogen, R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> may also be a group -R<SP>10</SP>Q where R<SP>10</SP> is a divalent C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon group and R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> may also together form such a divalent group; one of R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> must be H. The polymers are prepared by treating the monomers, in bulk or in an inert diluent, with an electron acceptor compound as catalyst. Preferred catalysts are (a) MR<SP>111</SP> n X (3-n) or a mixture of at least two compounds of different types selected from the types MR<SP>111</SP> n X (3-n) , M<SP>1</SP>R<SP>IV</SP> 3 or M<SP>11</SP>X<SP>1</SP> 3 , where M, M<SP>1</SP> and M<SP>11</SP> are each Al or B, R<SP>111</SP> and R<SP>IV</SP> are organic radicals, X and X<SP>1</SP> are halogens and n is 1 to 2; or (b) an organometallic compound of a metal of Group IIb, IIIb or IVb together with a halide of a metal of Group IIIb, or IVb, the two components being mixed in the presence of at least the type (B) monomer; or (c) a catalyst as defined in (a) or (b) above mixed, in the presence of at least the type (B) monomer, with a halogen, alkoxy, #-diketonate or acyloxy compound of a transition metal. Oxygen or a peroxy or azo compound may also be present. Catalysts described in the examples are (i) EtBCl 2 ; (ii) Et 3 Al 2 Cl 2 + Bz 2 O 2 ; (iii) Et 3 Al + SnCl 4 ; (iv) EtBCl 2 +Co(aOaC) 3 . Exemplified monomers are: (A 1 ) 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether, isobutyl vinyl ether, or allyl phenyl ether; (A 2 ) isobutylene, styrene, vinylidene chloride or isobutylene+isoprene; (B) acrylonitrile, ethyl, methyl or butyl acrylate, or acrylic acid.
