titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of polyamide foam plastics
abstract 1328957 Foamed polyamides STAMICARBON NV 19 Jan 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 2599/71 Heading C3C Polyamide foam is made by anionically polymerizing one or more molten lactams in the presence of a blowing agent, one or more foam stabilizers and one or more finely divided, porous materials. The porous materials have open cell structures and absorb the blowing agent more readily than the lactam. The blowing agent is usually a low-boiling aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, for example, petroleum ether. Compounds used as foam stabilizers include organosiloxanes, organopolysiloxanes and organosiloxane oxyalkylene block copolymers. The stabilizers are preferably present in a proportion of 0À5 to 1À5% of the weight of the monomer. Suitable porous substances specified are expanded vermiculite, expanded perlite, urea formaldehyde and phenol formaldehyde foams and various proprietary gas-chromatography carriers. The polymerization of caprolactam is exemplified, the polymerization being carried out conventionally starting with lactam-N-anions, in particular sodium caprolactam. Promoters may be present, e.g. tribenzamide and hexamethylene diisocyanate.
